Overview
The Pinnacle Peak Trail goes to
Pinnacle Saddle (5,920-feet) between Pinnacle and Plummer Peaks in the middle of the Tatoosh Range. On a clear day, the spectacular view from the saddle makes this route well worth the effort. To the north is a dramatic close up view of Mount Rainier and Paradise. To the south, views of Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens in the foreground and Oregon's Mount Hood on the horizon.
Need to Know
This trail has some very steep sections that may be loose underfoot, and snow may have to be crossed at some times of year, so come prepared. There is no designated camp along this trail, but crosscountry zone camping is allowed with a Wilderness Permit from the national park.
Runner Notes
Too steep and loose to be considered a running route for most people, but Pinnacle Peak does provide some a great training opportunity.
Description
Drive east either from Longmire or Paradise on the Stevens Canyon Road to the parking area at
Reflection Lakes. The trailhead is on the south side of the road. The trail begins with a gradual ascent but soon becomes a steep climb to the saddle where the trail ends. The vista from the saddle is fantastic when the weather is clear.
The spot will appear as a T-intersection with trails going off to the left and right. These are climber's trails to the adjacent summits. Standing on top of Pinnacle Peak (the peak directly to the east) is possible with a rock/snow scramble up the ridge. See Mountain Project for more information on the summit route.
Flora & Fauna
This is an excellent trail on which to see pikas and marmots.
