Overview

This trail system was built by volunteers in the Traverse des Sioux park between St. Peter Minnesota and the Minnesota river.

The trails are designed for mountain biking, trail running, hiking, and snowshoeing.

Description

You can start from the south end or the north end and connect all the trails in the system into a large loop. Just stay left at all the intersections (follow the arrows) and you are good.

You'll start on Trail F, This is a well traveled section of the trail system that is almost always in great shape. Just take the "sidewalk to nowhere" and you'll end up at the beginning of this trail which is also the southern most main entry point to the park. The eastern portion, which you'll finish the ride on, is slightly more difficult than the West side, but still very straight forward.

Next, you'll come to Trail E which was the first section built and as such is the most worn in and smooth section of trail here. It varies from tight and twisty in the south part, to open and fast in the middle.

Stay left again at Trail D which starts out on a small ridge line between what used to be an old farm field and the back waters of the Minnesota River. It is then nice and smooth, mainly along the bank of the Minnesota River on your way back to the start.

Another left turn puts you onto Trail B, which has a great view of the backwaters of the Minnesota River.

Turn right onto Traverse des Souix Rd.. follow it to the Trail A trailhead and turn right. This trail begins along some nice sandstone rock ledges, includes a very short but steep climb as well as a few tight, twisty sections. It also follows along the Minnesota River for some great scenery.

By now, you've reached Trail D again. Stay left at all junctions and work your way back to the start.

My favorite part of the trail where it passes between dozens of mature trees along the edge of the pond.

Shortly after the trail was built, a large tree fell across it. We had to move the trail slightly but this photo still gives a great idea of what the terrain is like on this section of trail.
