Runner Notes
This trail is about 50% fire road and 50% singletrack.
Description
This trail segment is accessible from the main trail starting in White Rock Bay. This also acts as the southern loop of the Tour of Antelope Island (Buffalo Run 25k/50k route). Most people do this trail counter-clockwise which means a fast descent down to the Split Rock on a fire road and then a decent singletrack switchback climb back up to the top. You can also run it clockwise however. The full loop is about 5 miles and has an interesting historical horse corral at the high point of the trail. A sign detailing the history is located there, and there are a few places to sit, rest, and refuel.
Once you've completed the loop, you can continue back to White Rock Bay, or head out to Elephant Head point (via the
Elephant Head Trail), a 3 mile out-and-back that overlooks the Great Salt Lake.
Flora & Fauna
Although it's rare to see bison on this section of the island, it is a possibility. The bay is named after a large rock split in half that sits down in the lower part of the valley.
