Runner Notes
There are quite a few rocky and rooty sections that may make trail running more of a challenge. It can also be slippery in some spots when wet.
Description
Marked by signs and red blazes, the Shongum Path connects the
Old Minnewaska Trail with the
Connector Trail, linking the Coxing Creek area with the West Trapps parking area. It is particularly useful if the parking area at Coxing Creek is full (very common in the summer weekends) and you still want to take a swim in the creek. This is a relatively deserted trail compared to the use other trails in the area. There are a few sections that have lots of tree roots and small rocks, but nothing that a person in good health can't maneuver.
This path follows an old Lenape Indian trail across the Shawangunks. It also marked the boundary between the 1730 Groote Transport Land Patent and the 1770 Nineteen Partners' Tract.
Flora & Fauna
You will find lady slipper orchids in the spring, deer, snakes, ferns, porcupines, and the rare black bear.
