Overview
The view from Nugget Point is a classic New Zealand panorama. Open ocean, dramatic coastline, and magical-looking offshore islands combine to make for an absolutely gorgeous view. The run to the point is easy going, and you're sure to see wonderful wildlife along the way.
Description
From the carpark follow the signed trail toward Nugget Point, enjoying the various viewpoints along the way. At the first lookout the island below is home to a colony of nesting Royal Spoonbills in summer, and Fur Seals are easy to spot on the nearby rocks. Be sure to look for the youngsters playing in the tide pools!
The trail continues out the point across sunny slopes with beautiful views over the water. On a hot day, a sunhat and water are a good idea. A platform just below the lighthouse has incredible views in all directions, and marks the end of the trail.
Flora & Fauna
Wildlife viewing at Nugget Point can be outstanding. On the rocks near the waterline you're sure to see Fur Seals year-round, and much rarer Elephant Seals and Sea Lions can be in the vicinity as well. Orcas, migrating whales and dolphins sometimes pass by the point. On most days albatross and other seabirds can be seen soaring over the waves.
