Runner Notes
Great training run!
Description
Though nothing particularly special, this is a great workout run, particularly for locals who live in or near West Vail or Vail. It's easy to connect this to the Gore Creek Valley Trail (West) or the
North Trail - Western Section to add some great singletrack and longer run.
Most people go to the lookout at the cell tower and turn around, but you can keep going and connect to
Nottingham Ridge Trail and another tower even higher.
There are two ways to start:
1. Wind your way up the neighborhood streets to the highest point where the pavement ends and the dirt road starts. There are very few parking spots.
2. Park at the end of the frontage road west of West Vail at the large North Trail lot, and take the North Trail - West singletrack until it intersects the Davos Hill doubletrack. This is the better option, but North Trail is closed every year until June 15.
Run up the dirt road, more steeply at first, in and out of some large drainages filled with aspen forests. Some places are exposed and can be hot in the middle of the day. The trail levels out and it's an easy finish to the end of a ridge with a bunch of cell towers and some great views of the neighboring valleys, Avon, Beaver Creek, and peaks of
Mount of the Holy Cross. Turn around here or keep on climbing if you want more.
