Dogs Off-leash
Overview
Runners will love this more gentle, and better-maintained section of the Sheltowee Trace NRT. This section features spectacular Kentucky forests and easy to navigate trail treads.
Runner Notes
Motorized dirt bikes use this section of the Trace.
Description
This southern portion of Section 24 of the Sheltowee Trace NRT stands in stark contrast to the
Sheltowee Trace NRT: Section 24 North which is colloquially known as Cromer Ridge.
The southern half of the section seems to be better managed as there is obvious (motorized) dirt bike traffic and the singletrack in this part has been hardened with interlocking concrete tiles. Despite apparent motorized use this part of the Sheltowee still has an intimate singletrack feel.
Begin at the trailhead off of KY 1956 and head south. You'll shortly encounter KY 80. Cross carefully. From the end of the guardrail cross and head left (east) a few dozen yards along the ample shoulder to find the singletrack on the south side.
The Trace drops into the forest and winds and rolls deeper into the woods as the sounds of the highway fade behind you.
The section shown ends at a gravel road. You can run out-and-back or keep going south and push for Cane Creek WMA and Laurel Lake beyond.
