Description
The Washington Creek Trail actually begins as a gravel road that leads along Washington Harbor at the junction of the
Feldtmann Lake Trail just south of Windigo. Look across to a fine view of Beaver Island. Head north to the seaplane dock and in a quarter mile, the boat dock. Be sure to head uphill to the Windigo Vistitor Center to see the moose skeleton, lighthouse lens, and other displays.
From the dock, head north along the shore for views of waterfowl and boaters. The trail narrows as it passes the Washington Creek campsites. After passing the group campsites, the trail heads inland along the creek. In a quarter mile you'll find the junction of the end of Isle Royale's legendary
Greenstone Ridge Trail.
Continue on and pass through woodland for a half mile and the trail reaches a 2-plank-wide foot-bridge across Washington Creek. A gaging station there monitors water flow. The last quarter mile is a gradual climb to the 3-way junction with the
Minong Ridge Trail and
West Huginnin Cove Trail. Be prepared for the challenges either of these options presents if continuing on.
Or, you can return the way you came, but come back changed.
Flora & Fauna
The harbor is inhabited with several duck species, cormorants and other waterfowl. Signs of beaver logging and moose tracks appear along the river.
