Runner Notes
Because it is steep right away, I recommend running the
Scorpion Valley Road to the second campground for a warm up. This would be a great workout loop for 5k, 10k or marathon runners who want hills and flats with incredible views.
Description
Just before the visitor center, there is a trail tucked into the hillside on your right. Right away, you'll ascend a few stairs and then continue on up the trail above the boat dock. Look back across the channel and over to Scorpion Anchorage.
Once you reach the top of the initial incline, the going flattens our as you run along the cliff's edge. Don't venture too close to the edge, as the drop off is dangerous. You'll be along the edge for about a mile. It is at the beginning of this flat area that I spotted my first Island Fox. I didn't have time to take my camera out though! When you arrive at Cavern Point, be sure to check out the hard sandy formations. They are only inches high.
Be sure to go past the service road before heading down the correct trail.
Flora & Fauna
Plenty of sea life can be seen swimming nearby, and foxes can be spotted here as well.
