Runner Notes
This trail can be rough and technical in spots with areas of loose footing. Overall, this is a nice run through a montane forest.
Description
This is a great trail that provides a journey that will be quiet and make you feel as though you've truly escaped into the wilderness. The Lodgepole pine dominates the area, making the trail shady and pleasant, even on warm days. Small meadows and quick viewpoints to the alpine are found along the way. A small lake surrounded by an open area gives a commanding view of the surrounding mountain peaks.
Find the trailhead directly behind the main parking area and get straight into the fun. At an intersection with South Saint Vrain Trail just after crossing a bridge, keep straight on North Sourdough. This is a well-signed intersection. Expect a few sharp climbs but for the most part, you'll be pointed down. Eventually, you'll cross a dirt road. This is a good bailout point to the Peak to Peak highway if you did not enjoy the first portion of this trail.
If you did like what you just completed, continue onward. The trail will offer more of the same as it winds its way to the terminus at
Middle St. Vrain Road (CO Hwy 92).
Flora & Fauna
Lodgepole pine dominates. Several nice creeks are crossed that have fishing potential.
