Description
Petroglyph Point is located outside of the main area of Lava Beds National Monument to the northeast. After driving east along the road that runs across the northern border of the monument, turn north on County Rd 111. Drive about one mile on County Rd 111, then turn east on County Rd 126. Drive about another mile east and then north along County Rd 126 to a parking area alongside Petroglyph Point on the east side of the road. Signs help mark the route.
Petroglyph Point was once an island in the middle of Tule Lake. Many, many years ago, Modoc peoples canoed out to the island and carved symbols into the soft volcanic rock at its base. This trail passes along the base of Petroglyph Point and offers views of Modoc rock art. A tall fence protects the petroglyphs.
Consider running to the top of Petroglyph Point on
Petroglyph Point Trail to gain views of Medicine Lake Volcano and the surrounding basin.
