The trail can be slippery and muddy depending on tidal conditions, so use caution if you'll be moving quickly.

From the trailhead after the tow bridge, head either left or right and keep the Potomac River over your shoulder. Follow the trail around the entirety of Theodore Roosevelt Island and view the swamp and marshes at several vantage points along the way. The trail is part pea gravel and part boardwalk but offers scenic views of the Potomac River, and Washington D.C. no matter which way you go.
