This trail begins near the Odell Lake Resort, and the trail is located just across the road. The Crater Butte Trail is well marked and difficult to miss. You'll be striking out to the west at first, and the trail will wind though the pine forests. In the first few miles, you'll be gaining some significant elevation, and will also take a southern turn. The grades are mostly moderate, but over the course of the first 7 miles, you'll gan nearly 1,000 feet in elevation. This is a strenuous trail to say the least!

Take the Crater Butte Trail west towards the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). You'll get views along the way of Diamond Peak. Just over halfway through the trail, you'll intersect with the Whitefish Creek Trail #42. Continue on your route to the west, or branch off on another adventure here!

The trail continues for another 3 miles or so, eventually ending at an intersection with the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT).

Maps and trail signs are a little lacking so be prepared to travel cross-country and use a map and compass. Also, mosquitoes were horrible during this July trip so plan to bring repellant and protective clothing. We saw no one on this trail.
