Description
The Bankhead Trail is partly a renamed section of the
Flat Rock Trail and partly a new section that starts at wide shoulder on Bankhead Parkway. The best way to access the trail via the aforementioned wide shoulder. The entrance is not marked so follow Bankhead Parkway south just past the parking area until you see an opening on your left with a steep, rocky decline.
The trail starts off with a descent for the first 1/2 mile with some easy switchbacks and starts to flatten out by the time you get to the intersection with the
Flat Rock Trail. From there its a very easy trail until you get to the end where you climb back up to and then over Bankhead Parkway before ending at the
Dummy Line Trail.
There is one spot to that is confusing. At the intersection with the
Oak Park Trail, the singletrack gives way to doubletrack. Be sure to keep an eye out to your left for when trail bears left and goes back to singletrack while the doubletrack, which is not the trail, continues on.
