A quick run to a beautiful overlook that is a popular option for locals and visitors to the area with easy access. The overlook is not to be missed if visiting the Baker River Valley. Perfect for sunrise or sunset as the overlook faces south.
Need to Know
Common Cafe is a great cafe in Rumney with live music and good beer and The Little House Inn is a good B&B/Hostel option.
Runner Notes
This is a steep run! About a half mile of the ascent is super steep and will get your heart pumping!
Description
The
Rattlesnake Mountain Trailhead is located on the north side of Buffalo Rd just west of Rumney Village. The parking area will hold about 4-5 vehicles with one or two more small pull-offs to the east of the main area.
The trail follows yellow markers and begins with an easy gradual climb up through a nice pine forest. After about a quarter mile, the trail begins to steepen and does not quit for about a solid half mile. The difficulty is eased by the beautiful mountain stream flowing parallel to the trail.
Once you reach the top of the mountain, the trail flattens out and works its way out to a loop which mainly consists of rock slabs with yellow trail markers painted on them to direct you. The view is stunning to the south overlooking
Rumney and down towards Plymouth. This is a great spot for sunset or sunrise or a picnic.
