This trail can be quite muddy in the winter and spring. Usually, by May conditions have dried out enough.

Runner Notes

Though it has a number of challenges, such as roots and narrow bridges, this is a fun run for those who prefer a more raw feel and don't mind a little adventure. Do avoid it when it's wet though.

Description

The Darvill Trail starts from a small parking area (3-4 spaces) off of East Hickox Road. From there, it climbs to Little Mountain Park along private property maintained by the Skagit Land Trust.

The start of the trail travels a narrow corridor hemmed in by a gravel road and nearby house. This residential scene soon fades away to be replaced by alders and Douglas firs on either side. The route is clearly defined and easy to travel, even where the trail is covered in tangles of roots. Ignore any spur trails you pass, as these lead into neighborhoods.

Ahead, a series of low bridges attempts to keep runners elevated above the wettest spots in this damp environment. These wooden links to drier ground add a unique flavor to the experience of this lovely forest. Some have chicken wire to reinforce the grip, but others don't, so it's best to pay attention as you cross.

As the trail gains elevation, it only grows prettier. The grade also gets steeper near the top, and occasional sections of stairs have been added to the trail. One such set rounds the exposed roots of a large tree that fell victim to a windstorm in the past. Not too far ahead, the Darvill Trail ends in an opening in the trees at the intersection with the West Loop and Up Quick.
