Runner Notes
This trail is quite rocky with short sections that may require some scrambling.
Description
This trail is part of the Peoria, Arizona mountain trails system. It begins at Westwing Park (27100 N Westwing Parkway, Peoria), where there is ample parking and restrooms.
The trail leaves the north area of the parking lot and follows signposts on city sidewalks for a short distance to the start of the trail. After winding through the neighborhood, it begins a steep climb to the ridge along Westwing Mountain. The trail is quite rocky, as the predominant geology is volcanic basalt and tuff. The trail follows the ridgeline to various small peaks, including Westwing Peak at 1903 feet (almost 500 feet above the trailhead).
The route includes spur trails to a couple of "scenic views" and an alternative section that is labeled "extreme" that climbs sharply through a pretty canyon. The entire trail is well-marked. Although the housing development is never far away, the trail offers great views in all directions and a real challenge for a neighborhood experience.
Flora & Fauna
Typical Sonoran Desert vegetation inhabits this area, with large saguaros populating the south-facing slopes.
