Permit required - New Zealand has unique system of simple (mostly) back country huts that typically have wood/coal heating stoves, plastic-covered mattresses, clean water and bunkhouse communal living. Space can be limited and permits are required. Check in the LDOC offices of major towns for permits. Good information can be found here- doc.govt.nz/

Runner Notes

A little more treacherous footing than much of the trail but still good for running.

Description

Leaving the Harris Shelter, you'll cut along the edge of a steep tussock grass hill. Being above the tree line allows you expansive views of the Hollyford Valley and the surrounding mountains. The trail rolls along trending down until you turn the corner and get a commanding view of the emerald green and deep blue waters of Lake Mackenzie. After making some steep switchbacks you are back in the Beech forest and shortly you arrive at the Lake Mackenzie hut.

Flora & Fauna

Southern Beech forests, Kea and Kaka parrots, Bellbird, Grey warbler, South Island Robin, Fantail and Brown creeper, Lancewood plants, Kiwi (you'll hear them but probably not see them), invasive Australian possums.
