Description
The trail starts off from the parking lot and gradually goes downhill and crosses a creek. The track switches back going up the hill. There are nice views towards the west on the way up.
Once at the top, the trail levels out, and you can take the
Shin Oak Trail around the backside of the hill or continue along the Rimrock Trail which follows the western/northern portion of the hill. The trail then goes back down the hill through switchbacks and becomes doubletrack and recrosses the creek.
There are a lot of pretty good views of the surrounding area, but you must find them between the trees that are abound at the top of the summit.
Flora & Fauna
The Balcones Canyonlands Preserve is a habitat for the protected Golden Cheek Warbler and Black Capped Vireo. Oak trees and cedars abound, and there are some wild flowers around in the fields. Be on the look out for rattlesnakes, which we encountered right off the trail.
There is not a lot of shade along the trail, except when ascending or descending the hill, meaning it is probably not a great choice for Texas summers.
