Roaring Run Natural Area sprawls across the Laurel Ridge mountain side, covering a +1500 foot promenade. The trails in Roaring Run Natural Area are "raw" in the sense that there is minimal maintenance for removing debris and the terrain takes on a similar persona. The trails are rough, full of softball-sized rock and small sticks and debris are plentiful across the trails.

Starting from the Route 31 trailhead parking lot, McKenna Trail starts at the southern end of the parking lot (furthest end from Route 31) following the treeline before entering the woods. Once in the woods, the trail winds its way over two smaller hills before encountering the first major intersection with Painter Rock Trail (note, there are two other trails that intersect McKenna, and they lead to Painter Rock Road trail). Trails are blazed and major intersections are marked with sign posts. To continue on McKenna, stay straight/right to climb the most significant rise on McKenna. At the top, runners will begin to descend before running into North Loop Trail.

There is no mountain biking or horseback riding. Adding to the technical terrain and often steep climbs or descents, the trails are often empty giving runners solitude, if that's the desire.
