The trail is always open, however, note that hunting is allowed in the George Washington National Forest in late fall.
Description
The Massanutten Trail is a 70-mile loop along the northern ridges of Massanutten Mountain, encircling Fort Valley, VA. There are multiple starting points, some of the most popular being
Signal Knob at the northern end, Edinburg Gap along the west side, and Camp Roosevelt at the southern end.
From any of the trailheads, follow orange blazes for a challenging out-and-back, or connect with another blazed trail for a loop.
The terrain is mostly rock-strewn primitive singletrack, with occasional stretches of doubletrack. This trail is not for the timid! Experienced runners will be challenged by the technical terrain both uphill and down. Plan on slow going. Also plan on carrying your own food and water as there are few opportunities to re-supply or receive assistance along the trail.
