CAUTION: Portions of the the Ft. Sheridan Forest Preserve are currently being restored so be mindful of trail crews in the area. For closures, I would contact the Army Corps of Engineers Chicago Branch.
Description
Parking: FREE parking is available outside the Ft. Sheridan Cemetery east off of Sheridan Rd.
Trail: Enter through the gap in the fencing near the cemetery. Follow the dirt road downhill, through Jane's Ravine and gradually climb to your first gravel descent, climbing to get your first glimpse of Lake Michigan.
From here, turn left then right down to the second gravel bed. After cresting this small rise, you'll see the Ft. Sheridan Water Tower rising above the trees to the south. Next, you approach treeline to the south. Keep an eye open for your next left turn.
The trail's slope decreases from here to the lake, taking you to the right to reach the great views from the lakefront bluff. Run briefly along the lakefront and turn westward into and along the ravine until you turn to cross Jane's Ravine Bridge. From here, the trail becomes difficult to follow but as long you continue to gradually climb westward you'll reach the parking lot where you started.
