Description

Grizzly Flat Road starts along Angeles Crest Highway about 7 miles from La Canada. Look for the locked gate on the large turnout on the western side of the road. It climbs steadily reaching a short spur on the right to a water tank in half a mile. Slightly further is a junction with the Hoyt Mountain Road (keep left). The road climbs up again and reaches a saddle with good views to the north and south. It then gently drops down in another half mile to a saddle and a junction with the Dark Canyon Trail and Grizzly Flat Cut-Off #2N80. Patches of non-native Spanish broom sometimes obscure the road which heads north dropping down several switchback to Grizzly Flat. From there, the Grizzly Flats Trail continues down into Big Tujunga Canyon to the Stonyvale Picnic Site.

Grizzly Flat Road is only cleared when there is an emergency such as a fire. It is overgrown with non-native Spanish broom and ceanothus. Oaks and some non-native pines offer a few patches of shade. Grizzly Flat was the site of a tree farm but most have burned down. There was a camp here but there is little trace of it now.

Flora & Fauna

Mostly chaparral species of ceanothus, scrub oak, manzanita, laurel sumac and non-native Spanish broom. Watch for poison oak and rattlesnakes.
