Description
The track was rebuilt following the Christchurch Earthquakes. It is a two-person wide, packed-dirt, well-graded track with great views of both the Christchurch and Lyttelton sides of the headland. Starting at Taylor's Mistake the trail climbs quickly to get above the cliffs, before winding along the coast toward Godley Head.
There are a few steps in places. As you round the head, you'll encounter abandoned WWII military structures: gun emplacements and a barracks. It is possible to leave the the track at the Headland near the very end of the Summit Road, but continuing around the Lyttelton side to join the road further up the ridge is worth the extra effort. This is the most challenging portion of the track, but the trail remains wide and well-graded with a series of steps in the steepest part.
