There is almost no elevation change. Start the trail by running across a narrow metal bridge and up to a raised dirt road, find the trail dropping off the other side of this road towards the river. The trail starts off hugging the embankment of the road but soon drops right into the trees. The trail is mostly smooth singletrack with the occasional sandy section.

There are tons of side trails that lead to the Rio Grande and few that lead back up to the raised dirt road. You'll never get too far though so you can always backtrack to the main trail, the Bosque (forest) is only a few hundred feet wide at its widest points. This section ends at a large open area with a couple of blue metal gates.
