The Fern Trail starts at the Fern Picnic Area, crosses Clear Creek Road, and goes up about 0.2 miles, where it meets a trail on the left—one end of a loop. The leg to the left (west) is a rocky climb with a nice overlook at the top. The leg to the right is considerably less rocky. The trail meets the Cemetery Ridge Trail at the top, midway through the loop. About 0.2 miles to the east, it meets the west end of the Hemlock Trail.
