Description
The Kinderhook Short Loop is an equestrian trail that is also open to foot traffic and bikes. Know the right of way rules before you head out. Bikes yield to horses and foot traffic; foot traffic yields to horses.
The trailhead is just above Newport, Ohio on Dana Run Rd and features plenty of parking and a pit toilet.
The loop can be done in either direction but expect steep climbing either way. As shown here (clockwise) the trail climbs a little at the start and then rolls along gently traversing the side of the hill. After a short while, you drop into a steep drainage, cross the creek and begin a steep climb out of the valley.
The total climb is nearly 500 vertical feet with some undulations along the way. Once you make it to the top of the ridge, the trail follows natural contours on the ridge top before starting its descent back toward the trailhead. The trail is just as good in either direction and can be used to link-up with other nearby roads and trails.
