Outer Limits begins at Time Trial Loop very near Tech's main trailhead with a gradual, meandering smooth surface to and along Deadman's Creek. After crossing the creek at the ski trail, it begins its descent in earnest as Deadman's stream bed quickly deepens.

At the Keweenaw Fault, the trail dives into the gorge created by the falls and rolls through a series of Hemlock shaded dips on the steep hill side above the creek. The trail continues to roll before popping out along the ski trail for a breather, then dives into the ravine again with significant exposure, before a sharp right banked turn brings it onto a moderate downhill plateau.

The trail turns right and rises slightly, continuing to follow the gorge, drops again, then leaves Deadman's to cross the ski trail and into another side ravine. Here speed picks up again to a slight rise topped with several more dips, a small lip as it crosses the ski trail again, followed by a wide banked turn to a bridge, and a right turn leading to a smoother, flatter section.

The trail then rolls more gently along Peepsock Creek, crosses on the ski trail and begins its extended climb. The first of the climb is steep, but it quickly moderates and begins a flatter winding course with numerous sweeping connected turns and dips. It takes its time to play in this way before skirting below the highway on a bench cut and resuming the climb. Still not steep, the climb continues, then moderates again as you come back to the main trailhead.
