Running counterclockwise (starting with the mountain bike trail) is strongly discouraged. The rules for the mountain bike trail are that riders ride counterclockwise, while hikers and runners travel clockwise. It is much safer for runners and hikers to have the riders coming at them instead of from behind. Please yield to riders.

Overview

A great loop around a very scenic area with some small challenges along the way.

Need to Know

At roughly the 4 mile mark, you'll join an equestrian trail for about 0.5 miles. It is a gravel road. The mountain bike trail splits back off to the right shortly after the road starts to climb. If you miss the turn off, the equestrian trail takes you over to Lyons Falls, which is a nice extension if you want more miles, but the initial climb after the turn off is a tough one. It will also add roughly 2 miles to your trip.

Runner Notes

All of the trails in this course are part of the Mohican 100.

Description

You'll be starting at the covered bridge parking area and taking Hog Hollow Trail, running up to the fire tower. The run starts out with a very gradual climb, which I find perfect for a warm up for what's to come. About 0.75 miles in, you'll have a fairly steep climb for about 0.25 miles. This is the longest "tough" climb of the trail. The remaining 4 miles are mostly rolling, although there are a few small challenges.

Once at the end of Hog Hollow Trail at the fire tower (roughly 2 miles), you'll cross the street and find the path to the Mohican State Park MTB Trail at a small opening in the trees behind the tower (slight right or west of the tower). Once in the clearing behind the tower, turn right on the well road and follow this roughly 50 yards to the intersection with the mountain bike trail.

Turn right on this trail and follow the mountain bike trail signs back to the parking area next to the covered bridge. While on the mountain bike trail, be on the lookout for mountain bike riders. They should be riding in the opposite direction of you. A quick yield and greeting as they wiz by, and you'll be back on your way.

This route can be easily extended by following the equestrian trail over to the Lyons Falls Trail if so desired.

Added in the extra over to Lyons Falls and a few other sections. Trails were quite icy, but that is pretty expected for this time of year. 10mi — 2h 00m
