Description
The Gray Butte Trailhead is located in the southern portion of the Crooked River National Grassland, just south of Forest Service Road 57 and less than a quarter mile east of the intersection of Forest Service Road 57 and Forest Service Road 57-500. It's near the old McCoin homestead and orchard.
From the orchard, head west on Gray Butte Trail #852. After almost a mile the trail turns south, passing along the base of Gray Butte. In 2.7 miles, Gray Butte Trail #852 joins
Cole Loop Trail # 854 to head southeast for about a mile. Where
Cole Loop Trail # 854 splits off, take a right to stay on Gray Butte Trail #852, which continues south before making a sharp turn west.
The trail continues southwest, entering Deschutes County and BLM land at about 4.8 miles. As the trail continues south, you'll have nice views of Smith Rock and the cascade mountains. The trail ends at the junction with
Burma Road and
Summit Trail.
Flora & Fauna
You travel through Western juniper, sage, and grass communities. Indian paintbrush can be found on the trail.
