Try to do the trail early in the morning as clouds tend to move in later in the day, diminishing the views. The trail can get muddy when it rains, making running difficult.

You start by climbing up a cement road, gaining approximately 200 feet. After this you'll follow a dirt path ascending through forest. A switchback corner with a bench reveals a gulch and views of Makamaka'ole Falls. The trail continues to ascend up switchbacks, with views of the Waihe'e Valley. Running along the ridge offers lots of amazing views (clouds permitting).

Trail ends at a hill called Lanilili at 2,563 feet, where there is a small deck with a picnic table. If it isn't clouded in, you can see views of Haleakala on one side and all the way to Molokai on the other. Return to your car via the same trail.

Enjoy a forest of guava, kukui, swamp mahogany, and Cook Island pines.
