Description
After deciding to drop from Torreys Peak along Kelso Ridge, we passed two groups who both separately wanted us to know that we should turn around. Probably due to 14er fever and that running
Grays and Torreys Peaks is a great way to knock out two summits, this technical route gets more action than it probably should considering its exposure and somewhat careful route finding.
That said, if you have time, trust your ability and/or have a helpful photo guide (see
14ers.com), and don't mind exposure, this can be a challenging/rewarding and less busy route.
In addition to exposure and route finding, the rock through this ridge can be loose and untrustworthy, so make sure to maintain three points of contact (when possible) and test the rocks before you put full weight on them. Ropes are not necessary. The
Dead Dog Couloir is a popular, classic spring ski line.
