Need to Know

Trail maps are available at the start of White Loop Trail.

Runner Notes

Be prepared to run in wet shoes and socks.

There’s at least one organized trail run at Hal Scott Preserve each year in the fall with multiple distances and use white, red, and yellow trails.

Description

From parking area, go 1.9 miles on White Loop Trail to reach trailhead of Red Loop Trail (red blazes). Red trail is over 6.5 miles so full round trip is about 10.5 miles.

Mostly easy non-technical doubletrack. In summer time, there is a lot of rain and trail has a lot of standing water about ankle deep.

Mostly open areas without much shade. Use sunscreen and bug spray.

The Red Loop Trail is similar to White Loop Trail but not as well travelled, so you likely won’t see anyone on the entire 6.6 miles. It’s a nice peaceful experience.

On occasion, you might encounter horse back riders on the trail.

There are a couple of short segments that go along the power line clearing. Follow the blazes and arrows to stay on the trail.

At about the 2.5 mile mark, turn left along the canal. The trail looks like it crosses the canal but that is a side trail that is not well maintained.

Flora & Fauna

I saw several deer, a few rabbits, a few turtles, and some interesting birds. You'll find mostly grassy wetlands with sporadic pines.
