Runner Notes
Pico Canyon Park has a combination of wilderness and suburban trail that is about 0.59 miles one-way length. Great for neighborhood running experience.
Description
The Pico Canyon Park is in the nice neighborhood of Stevensons Ranch. The only trail starts from the parking lot and is nicely maintained, wide, and shady. At the entrance of the trail, there is a large oak tree fondly known as 'The Old Glory' that welcomes you. Right around the entrance there are a few picnic tables and a clean restroom near the parking lot.
At 0.2 miles, on the right side, there is a group of oak trees with great shade and a horizontal branch perfect for a family portrait. Adjacent to these trees on the right side is a set of paved stairs which go up to the residential community. These 163 evenly shaped steps are very popular in the morning and evening exercise hours amongst the local residents.
Keep strolling along the trail, and at around 0.5 miles you'll encounter the stairs carved out in the dirt. There are approximately 340 steps of different heights with short runs in between along the ridge, which lead you to the high point in that area. Once on the top of the stairs, you may continue along the open space with plenty of trails crisscrossing or turn around and return to the parking lot. The 340 steps offer a steep (60% grade,) continuous climbing experience, perfect for a quick cardiovascular exercise.
