Need to Know
Four river crossings, but they can be done easily under normal conditions.
Description
This trail is a little rough, and there are a couple of places that could use more blazes—especially the river crossings, but it is by no means awful and is very much worth the trip.
The first 0.9 miles follows the Saline River passing several cascades and deep pools. When you see a low water bridge, be sure to turn left to begin uphill. You'll follow a bluff line above the river for several hundred feet. This is the last water on the trail. There are several interesting rock formations in this area.
The next mile winds up the mountain with several nice vistas and a couple of narrow bluff line passes. From 2.3 to about 2.6 miles, you'll have to scramble up some fairly steep rocks but the view at the end of the scramble is worth it.
At about 2.9 miles, the trail ends and you turn right (uphill) onto the road to get to the tower. The trail is very easy from here. The was tower built in about 1938 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The best views would be with fall colors or after the leaves fall off completely.
