Description
Drive to the end of the road at Yaquina Head and park near the lighthouse. The Salal Hill trailhead is at east end of the parking lot. The trail is an out-and-back route with a mild climb. There are great views of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse to the west. In the summer, you may see bald eagles that prey on nesting seabird chicks. Keep an eye towards the ocean and you'll likely see spouting whales.
At the top of Salal Hill, you can look back towards Newport and find various landmarks such at the the Yaquina Bay Bridge and the Lighthouse at the Yaquina River bar. After going back down the hill, be sure to explore the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, Cobble Beach (below the lighthouse), Quarry Cove, and the Interpretive Center. Restrooms are located at the trailhead.
Flora & Fauna
Murres, Thompson Warbler, salal plants, bald eagles, peregrine falcons.
