Parking at the Prospect Heights Trailhead requires a $5 fee or an AK State Park Pass. Parking at the Basher Trailhead is currently free.
Runner Notes
This trail is great for runners as there are minimal obstacles to overcome. The grade up the ridge will be challenging.
Description
The Near Point Trail takes you to the top of a rounded alpine knob and provides access to the
North Fork Campbell Creek Trail. The trail is typically accessed via the
Basher Trail or the
Wolverine Bowl trail from the Basher Trailhead and Prospect Heights Trailhead, respectively.
The trail begins at the prominent trail post where there is a 4-way intersection with trails going to Basher Trailhead, Prospect Heights Trailhead, Near Point and
Wolverine Peak. Heading north on the trail, the trail has a low incline for about a half mile. You'll come upon another trail sign for the Near Point Trail, directing you up the south ridge. The north ridge trail appears to be quite overgrown and is not recommended as it is often very muddy. Proceeding up the south ridge, the trail has a very steady, moderate incline going through the alders and opening up to a rocky alpine.
This trail has an intermediate rating for its grade.
