Need to Know

This trail is an out and back, but it connects up with several other trails. The most important thing is that there is no water source after about 5 miles, so refilling is important, especially if you are planning to continue on Lobo Peak Trail #57 or Gavilan Trail #60. There is plenty of foot traffic close to the trailhead, but you'll have solitude after a couple of miles.

Runner Notes

The trail is a nice, constant uphill grade, with some exceptions. Footing is excellent in most places. You can get a very nice rhythm both up and down.

Description

The trailhead is at the far end of Columbine Campground. There is a vault toilet and parking. For the first 5 miles, the trail follows Columbine Creek. There are several creek crossing, four with well-constructed bridges. Other crossings can be made by hopping from rock-to-rock, unless the water is high.

1.5 miles from the trailhead is a trail leading to Gold Hill and Twinings. Another mile up there is access to Placer Fork Trail.

Flora & Fauna

During late summer, asters and Indian paint brush are the prominent flowers. During early summer, columbine may be seen. Although no bear scat was on the trail, bears are in the area. Wild turkeys may be seen in the meadows. During a rainy summer, there are many types of mushrooms, including boletus.
