Overview
Access to Arthur's rock boulders and climbing routes on trail. View of Front Range from top of Arthur's Rock. Clockwise offers more gradual ascent with great views of Arthur's Rock climbing routes from the neighboring ridge. Parking and restrooms at the start of the trail make it perfect for running.
Need to Know
Daily parking pass is $9; however, annual passes can be purchased. Lory State Park is a popular mountain biking location, so expect to see some mountain bikers on nearby trails, including
Howard Trail.
Runner Notes
Trail is friendly to trail runners, with exception to the short steep side trail to the peak. Also the very beginning of the trail has some large rocks in the trail, but other than that it is very even footing.
Description
Trailhead is located at the end of the dirt road in Lory State Park. Get a daily parking pass from the Visitor Center and then drive to the end of the road where there are signs for Arthur's Rock and restrooms.
Arthur's Rock Trail is intended for foot traffic only; however,
Howard Trail is open to equestrians and bikers as well as runners. I personally did it clockwise, up
Howard Trail and down
Arthur's Rock Trail, but it can be done either way.
Howard Trail has significantly less traffic and goes farther into the foothills, giving a more isolated feel.
There are also a few spots that offer nice views of Arthur's Rock, which could be a great place to take a break and watch any climbing parties on Arthur's Rock. There is a short but steep side trail that gives access to the top of Arthur's Rock.
Arthur's Rock Trail is steeper in general, but offers direct access to Arthur's Rock climbing areas and boulders. The trail has limited shade, especially midday, so plan accordingly. There is no water source at the trailhead or anywhere on the trail.
