Description

The Red Trail is the primary loop through the Lake Proctor Wilderness Area, with a few other side trails branching off it. The trail travels through a variety of ecosystems with opportunities to see birds and other wildlife.

From the parking lot, the trail starts as singletrack heading north into the woods around Lake Proctor. There are a number of junctions as the trail intersects with other spurs and fire roads, but the junctions are well marked with red arrows and/or signs. About 1/3 mile from the parking lot, the trail splits into a loop, with the western portion continuing through the woods and the eastern side joining a dirt road under some power lines.

The trail continues to alternate between singletrack and doubletrack throughout the loop. The western half of the loop is primarily wooded and shady, with the trail mostly firm due to pine needles and other vegetation. The eastern half of the loop travels through low scrub and sandhills and tends to be mostly sunny and quite sandy.

There is a moderate sized rain shelter on the northwestern portion of the loop in case of inclement weather. The trail mostly keeps to slightly higher ground, so is generally not susceptible to mud or flooding.
