Description

When the Soda Mountain Wilderness was established in 2009, the only actual singletrack trail within it was the PCT: Highway 5 to Highway 140 (near Fish Lake).

The wilderness is, however, traversed by a number of now old, abandoned, or decommissioned ranch and logging roads. It was convenient and cost-effective to re-purpose some of these old roads into trails, such as the Lone Pilot Trail and the Boccard Point Trail.

This connector trail also follows a decommissioned old road from an informal parking area off Old Highway 99 South to a junction with the Lone Pilot Trail.

The trail leaves the parking area and climbs steadily southeast for 0.4 miles before turning to the east and continuing to climb to where it meets the Lone Pilot Trail. The trail crosses open terrain with little or no shade but with good views of Mount Ashland to the north and Mount Shasta to the south. Going north on the Lone Pilot Trail will take you to a junction with the PCT: Highway 5 to Highway 140 (near Fish Lake) near Pilot Rock.

Going south on the Lone Pilot Trail which will take you east to a junction with the PCT: Highway 5 to Highway 140 (near Fish Lake) just east of Porcupine Mountain. This connector can be combined with the PCT: Highway 5 to Highway 140 (near Fish Lake) and the Rhyolite Ridge Trail for an aerobic hike (or run) around Point 5401 with sweeping views to the south along the way.
