Overview
Combines several viewpoints on the AT (Sugarloaf, Hogback, Little Hogback) with the Devil's stair loop to form a longer loop.
Description
Because of the steep grade, the first two miles of the
Little Devils Stairs Trail run in the Shenandoah National Park can be tough if the day is warm. The best time to do this run is the early spring when water levels are at a peak, making the numerous waterfalls along Keiser Run that much nicer. At one point, the trail even passes through a small set of falls. Enjoy spectacular views of either side of the gorge as the Little Devis Stairs trail gets closer to the top of the gorge.
The section on the
Piney Branch Trail is tough if there has been considerable rainfall. That being said, this is a lovely trail through the woods with no distant views but following the Piney River. Along the trail, there are at least two small waterfalls and a number of pools and cascades to explore.
The trail gradually descends heading along the forested canyon floor and has been relocated to avoid a few stream crossings. There will be at least two crossings before reaching the junction with the
Hull School Trail.
