The Kelly Island Fishing Access site provides a great opportunity to get into nature without needing to drive way up into the mountains. While most trails at Kelly Island are just game trails, the loop described here is a favorite among locals and dog walkers. Please note that this trail is unmaintained and often has logs and other obstacles to navigate around. To access this trail, park at the main fishing access site lot and head north. You'll see some large rocks that create a path across a slough. If the water levels are high, or you do not want to cross the boulders, you can also access this trail from the Humble street access. Once across the rocks, you can head onto the riverbank area or follow the trail that lies at the edge of the forest. This trail does not vary much in elevation, however there are plenty of downed trees that will create obstacles at times. Due to the proximity to the river, the trail conditions can vary widely throughout the year. It is not uncommon for spring water levels to rise above parts of the trail. The short loop goes around the river's edge and into the cottonwood forest that covers much of Kelly Island. Those hiking in the morning or evening have a good chance of seeing birds, and other wildlife like deer and beavers. You can choose to complete the main loop, or go adventure on any of the small trails that weave through the cottonwoods in this area. It is a good thing to note that this area is used for many different activities such as fishing and hunting so please be respectful of all users. While this area does not have too many developed trails, it still offers a great chance to get away from the noise of the city and enjoy a peaceful cottonwood forest along the Clark Fork River.
