From an un-signed junction with the Ice Lake Trail, head right and to the north. Climb steadily uphill through open terrain, soon arriving at a deep cut ravine and intermittent waterfall. The trail is well-worn but with loose rock. Continue steeply uphill through areas of scrub and low bushes. The views of the upper basins and snowy peaks only gets better the higher you go.

Pass by some old mines and rusty rails - with bits of mining debris. Finally, you'll reach flatter ground as you approach the lake and make several crossings of the outflow creek. The beautiful Island Lake is your reward - situated in an alpine bowl with 13ers all around. The milky green water is mesmerizing in different seasons and in sunlight from every angle. Enjoy a picnic from any of the many viewpoints around the lakeside.
