Description
This loop is a fantastic way to get higher and discover the fabulous panorama around Montpellier. Looking West you'll see the Cevennes going for miles and miles. Looking East you'll be able to see the Mediterranean coastline with the towns of Pavalas, Vic, Frontignan and even Sete. The nearby natural reserves and ponds can also be seen.
The trail starts at the abandoned – but well preserved – Saint Félix-de-Montceau Abbey. If you have time, it's a worthy visit as there are signs explaining how the abbey was abandoned after several attacks.
The trail starts with views looking West, onto the mountains. There are several lookouts as you progress.
The trail is generally poorly marked and hard to follow in parts. Having a digital / physical map is recommended.
At 2.4km/1.5mi, a fork allows you to shorten your journey by taking
Abbey's Surroundings Cutout – although you'll be missing on the main views of the East side. If not interested, continue your ascension. The run starts following a main fire access road from that point on.
When on the East side, stop by the
Pioch Noir Summit Spur for a spectacular view onto the surroundings.
At 7.6km/4.7mi, you'll meet again
Abbey's Surroundings Cutout. You can use it again as a shortcut back to the lot. Otherwise, the trail deviates from the access road and guides you gently back to the West side, where more viewpoints await.
Don't forget to stop by
Roc d'Anduze Summit Spur for another great viewpoint onto the Cevennes.
