Starting from the trailhead, at the end of Forest Road 208, the trail heads southward. It travels along the top of John's Mountain to its southern end. Here, the trail loops around left and begins descending towards Keown Falls. It passes by the falls, then begins to climb up another ridgeline. It follows the ridgeline until it turns off to head back up to the trailhead and overlook.
