Anacapa Island

Overview

Visitors to Anacapa Island will be amazed by the rugged coastline, dramatic overlooks, and stunning coastal views. Anacapa is composed of three islets, East, Middle, and West, but visitors are only allowed to visit the East Islet, and a small beach on the West Islet known as Frenchy's Cove which can be reached by boat. The East Islet has a variety of trails to explore highlighted by an amazing landscape, abundant wildlife, and the last permanent lighthouse built on the west coast.

Local Info

A small visitor center is located in one of the historic Coast Guard buildings. The trail system at Anacapa incorporates over two miles of trails. Runners must stay on designated trails, and no off-trail travel is permitted.

Visiting Tips

Anacapa Island is only accessible by boat. Island Packers offers year-round service to the island with a variable schedule 3-7 days per week. Travel time from Ventura and Oxnard Harbors is approcimately 1 hour. Visitors must climb from the boat up a steel-rung ladder to a dock. Once ashore, visitors must climb 157 stairs to the top of the island. Non-landing trips are also available. For more information, click here.

Camping & Lodging

Primitive camping is available on the island. Seven sites are available. Reservations are required and are $15 per night per site. Picnic table, food storage box, and pit toilet are provided. No water is available.

There is no food or drink available on the island. Be sure to bring your own food and water. Picnic tables are available at the visitor center.

Other Activities

The waters surrounding the island are ideal for swimming, diving, snorkeling, and kayaking. Fishing is allowed only in designated areas and with a valid California state fishing license with an ocean enhancement stamp. No fishing is allowed in the marine reserve.
