These forests were lush with sword fern (shown here) as well as deer fern, maidenhair fern, coralroot, bleeding heart, corydalis, bunchberry, twinflower, pipsissewa, and other native plants.

This classic Pacific Northwest forest has plenty of ferns, moss, and lichens, but it's not old growth. I met an old-timer who used to log these forests and now comes back to throw his sleeping bag on a mat and sleep under the stars.
