Ancient Castle of Stensjöborg [Suggest Edits]

Description

Only 20 kilometers from the center of Stockholm lies one of the most unspoiled areas of natural beauty in central Sweden–Tyresta National Park and Nature Reserve. The area is characterized by a rift valley landscape which is typical for central Sweden but unique in an international perspective.

In the middle of the park, by the beautiful Lake Stensjön, you'll find the ancient castle of Stensjöborg from early iron age (800-1000 A.D), high above the water, with a fantastic view over the lake and a large burn area from an extensive forest fire in 1999 that left deep traces in the area west of the lake.

Short Run: For closest access, take the Ancient Castle Trail of Tyresta National Park (Fornborgsslingan Loop) from Stensjödal where you'll find a large parking lot (for free). The trail is 6 km long and goes around the Lake Stensjön and passes through parts of the large fire area. The trail is marked with green/white signs and is intermediate to difficult.
