Big Blue Lake [Suggest Edits]

Description

This is an exquisite cobalt blue gem of an alpine lake, set in a rugged bowl formed by towering light-colored granite slopes. The lack of easy trail access means that it has kept all of its wilderness character.

The nearby backcountry campsites make this a great place to spend the night while hiking the Big Blue Lake Loop.

All-Day Run: The lake can be reached from the Taylor Lake Trailhead via either Hogan Lake or Upper Albert Lake. Established trails will take you to either of these lakes but cross-country travel, over steep, rocky ground, is required to actually reach Big Blue Lake. To go from either Hogan or Upper Albert to Big Blue, you must be comfortable proceeding without a trail, proficient in cross-country navigation, and confident scrambling (but no higher than Class 2) on scree, rocks, and loose slopes.
